Dear WLVS Families,

As technology continues to evolve, so does our responsibility to protect the students entrusted to our care. West Las Vegas Schools is proactively addressing the increased availability of smart glasses, wearable cameras, and similar electronic devices that can discreetly capture, record, store, or transmit audio, video, images, and other information.

Our concern extends beyond classroom distractions. These technologies create new privacy and safety concerns for our students and staff. No child or staff member should have to worry about being secretly or inappropriately photographed, recorded, or having their image or voice captured and shared without their knowledge or appropriate authorization. We want our families to know that WLVS is taking proactive steps to protect their children from the potential misuse of these rapidly changing technologies.

Under the WLVS Student Handbook, smart glasses and other wearable technology with electronic, camera, audio, video, recording, transmitting, or similar capabilities are considered electronic devices and are subject to the District’s electronic device expectations. During the school day, student electronic devices must be silenced or powered off and stored out of sight as required by the Student Handbook. Students may not wear or use smart glasses or similar electronic eyewear during the school day when the device has recording, photography, audio, video, transmitting, or other prohibited electronic capabilities.

Students who need corrective lenses should use standard, non-electronic eyewear while at school. Exceptions may be considered when an electronic or assistive device is specifically authorized as an approved accommodation. Students are prohibited from using electronic devices to photograph, video-record, or audio-record students or employees during the school day without prior authorization from the school administration. Violations may result in disciplinary action consistent with the WLVS Student Handbook and applicable discipline matrix.

School administration may authorize photography or recording for appropriate school-related purposes, including assemblies, performances, celebrations, athletic events, or other designated activities. Such authorization does not permit students to photograph or record individuals or situations in violation of District expectations regarding privacy, safety, or appropriate conduct. Electronic devices used or possessed in violation of District expectations may be confiscated.

We ask our families to partner with us by discussing these expectations with their children and ensuring that smart glasses and other prohibited wearable electronic devices are not brought to or used at school. We also encourage parents and guardians to talk with their children about the importance of respecting others' privacy and the potential consequences of capturing or sharing photographs, videos, or recordings without permission.

Technology will continue to change, but our responsibility to protect our students will not. WLVS is committed to providing schools where children can learn, interact with their peers, participate in activities, and simply be children without fear that their private conversations, images, or actions are being secretly recorded or shared.

Today, Luis E. Armijo Elementary schools has conducted a series of emergency drills to ensure our students and staff know what to do in the event of an actual emergency.

This is a friendly reminder that our Student Parent Orientation Barbecue is tonight at 6:00. Tonight's orientation will begin in the WLVMS Gym. This is an opportunity to meet our teachers, discover what is new, tour the buildings, and grab a bite to eat.

This is a friendly reminder that tomorrow, Thursday, July 30th, West Las Vegas Middle School will host a Jump-Start Day from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The purpose of this event is to pick up schedules, request schedule changes, and receive any PowerSchool support with the app, accessibility, or forms. To expedite the process, please ensure all PowerSchool Forms A-O are complete.
